Of Ice Cream And Kurt Vonnegut

Two purchases were made yesterday. Well, okay, many purchases were made yesterday, as it was grocery shopping day, but the two that stand out for me were a half gallon of Mocha Mudslide Fat Free Ice Cream and Look At The Birdie: Unpublished Short Fiction by Kurt Vonnegut.

The two, when taken separately, are very good on their own. The Mocha Mudslide is creamy and cold and adequately refreshing on a day as warm as the ones that we have been having lately. The book, though not quite as helpful to escape the heat, is a very large help in escaping, well, just about everything else.

When taken together, one feels as though everything is going to be just fine.

Last night, the Minnesota State Fair put on a concert featuring the double bill of KISS and Rush. This combines, not only two of my favorite bands, but also would have provided fertile ground for references to two of my favorite Paul Rudd films (if you can name them, you get a prize*).

I learned of it far too late to obtain tickets or a ride there and I will forever list it among one of my biggest regrets in life.

I’ve recently started playing LEGO Harry Potter on X-Box 360 and it’s a blast. I’ve already wrapped up Years 1 and 2 (Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets), though there are a few achievements I’d like to go back for.

The fine people over at The Fabulist had returned from a very long hiatus, only to find themselves swarmed by readers who were far too enthusiastic at their return and who ended up crashing their website due to exceeded bandwidth, thus putting them back on hiatus, though it was a short one, and now they’re back again.

Whew.

Though I’m afraid it might cause them to disappear again, please go and check them out. Their site never ceases to amaze and entertain me.

A man by the name of Glenn Beck (some of you may have heard of him, for those who have not, please refrain from Googling, as you’re much better off being kept in the dark here) is currently delivering a speech in Washington DC, at the very spot and on the very day of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legendary “I Have a Dream” speech. Beck’s speech is titled “Restoring Honor”, or so I’m told, since I refuse to watch or listen to it, and I’m also told that the theme of the speech is something about “taking back civil rights”.

It sounds quite racist to me, but even if I misunderstand the tone of the speech, it very clearly, even to a person who is not listening to it, the opposite of what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had done in 1963.

Here is that speech, the Dr. King speech, a speech I will gladly listen to, recite, and spread among people as often as humanly possible:

I would talk more about Glenn Beck and why he just doesn’t seem to understand just how crazy he sounds, but I have some cleaning to do, some writing to do, and some video games to play. Also, I just don’t have the energy to waste on such insanities.

*and by “prize” I mean a comment, by me, saying “Hey, you’re right!”
